NDS Music Festival 15th-17th March 2019

North Devon Sinfonia is seeking support to realise exciting plans for the inaugural NDS Music Festival in 2019.

This is a pioneering venture which will bring world class professional musicians to North Devon to work with and inspire both young musicians from schools across the region, and local adult amateur musicians.

North Devon Sinfonia will work in partnership with Devon Music Hub, and all schools in the area (primary and secondary). The professionals will run workshops, give demonstrations and concerts and provide professional mentoring to NDS.

The School Workshops, run by a professional musical educator and composer team, and combining music and literature to excite and inspire young people, will start in January and run through to the week of 12th March. During that week the pace steps up, with the musicians from the Fidelio Trio and Festive Flutes giving concerts, demonstrations and workshops in schools.

On Friday 15th March we will draw as many young players as possible to the Queen’s Theatre in Barnstaple to play music together, concluding with a concert to showcase what they have all learned. The more advanced young people will be trained and conducted by Maxime Tortelier.

Throughout the weekend of March 16th and 17th, Maxime will rehearse North Devon Sinfonia, joined by as many of the young players as possible, to prepare 2 major works: Beethoven’s Triple Concerto and Mahler’s 5th Symphony.

The concert on Saturday evening will feature Festive Flutes and the Fidelio Trio, who will be joined by North Devon Sinfonia in the second half for a performance of the Triple Concerto.

The final Concert on Sunday will feature Mahler’s Symphony No 5, played by North Devon Sinfonia and conducted by Maxime Tortelier.

Such an ambitious plan to inspire young people and draw new audiences to Classical Music has never been attempted in North Devon before and is sure to receive a lot of publicity. However, the cost of running this Festival is very high; while we expect to get some support from the Arts Council, we need to raise a considerable amount of money from local Sponsors, charities, and other generous supporters and hope you will be amongst them!

Please contact the NDS Orchestra Manager, Rod Mullick on 07887943789 or [email protected] for more details and to show your support for this ambitious Festival.
